Be a Part of the Annual Student of the Year Event

Join us on April 25th in recognizing 17 outstanding students from the Shoals. One student from every high school in Lauderdale and Colbert Counties will be honored and recognized at an evening banquet at the Marriott Conference Center. Special video presentations of the 17 students will show you why they were nominated. We’ll award special gifts for the students and announce the 2013 Student of the Year.
The Student of the Year event will raise awareness of the Scholar Dollars program in our community as well as raise money to fund the program. Three levels of event sponsorship are available.

*The TimesDaily will run a 6-week campaign in the paper and online promoting the event and ticket sales. This campaign is valued at more than $23,000.
In the News: Sheffield High teen gets 2012 Student of the Year

Sheffield High School student Eric Roddy was named the 2012 Student of the Year by the Shoals Scholar Dollars program for his outstanding leadership, academics and extracurricular activities. Among Roddy’s achievements include starting a program titled “BYOB,” or Bring Your Own Backpack. The donated backpacks went to students in need, as well as tornado victims in the Phil Campbell and Hackleburg areas. Roddy has also devoted more than 1,000 hours to community service, holds a 4.0 grade point average and is involved in at least nine school clubs. Continue Reading »

Seventeen area students are in the running for Shoals Student of the Year, a program designed to honor successful students and raise money for the Shoals Scholar Dollars program. The 17 students represent all public and private high schools in Colbert and Lauderdale counties. The winning student will be announced April 26 at a banquet at the Marriott Shoals Conference Center in Florence. Randy Pettus is a firm believer in the Shoals Scholar Dollars program. He said, “I came out of retirement to do this.” Shoals Scholar Dollars began after several Rotarians had a vision to bring a similar program originating in Hopkinsville, KY to the Shoals. A group in the Shoals is asking for support for a community-wide project. The goal is to send every high school student from Colbert and Lauderdale Counties to college for free, if they meet a certain criteria. To qualify for the Shoals Scholar Dollars Program, students must meet four simple guidelines. They must have a 2.75 G.P.A, be an American citizen, have a clean record and 95% attendance at school. The cost of a college education is escalating almost yearly with tuition and fee increases. It’s becoming more difficult for students from middle class families to advance their educations. We don’t often get the opportunity to have fun and exert a positive influence at the same time. The week of April 24 is one of those rare opportunities.
