Downtown will be alive with runners this morning to raise money for Shoals Scholar Dollars.
The annual Runnin’ Around Downtown 5K and Confetti 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk will take participants through the University of North Alabama campus and through the historic downtown area.
The run begins at 8 a.m. at First Metro Bank at the corner of Pine and Alabama streets, and the fun run/walk begins at 9 a.m.
“Runnin’ Around Downtown is an event our First Metro Bank team looks forward to year after year,” said Rodney Howard, president and EEO if First Metro. The bank sponsors the run.
“It is an event that allows our community to join together in a fun-filled setting, while raising money to positively impact the academic future of local students,” he said.
Shoals Scholar Dollars raises money through donations to help cover tuition costs for local students who want to continue their education beyond high school. Entry fees for today’s run are $20 for the 5K run, $12 for the Confetti 1-mile run, and $25 to enter both.
This morning’s downtown run comes on the heels of the year’s first First Friday.
“That attracts a different audience from First Friday,” said Teryl Shields, director of the Florence Main Street program. “Believe it or not, as people are running, they notice what’s going on around them.
They hopefully will come back and check out the stores they see.”
Shields said the run and similar events are a way of bringing people to town.
“Anything we can do to promote downtown Florence as a lively, inviting and engaging place, Main Street is all for it,” she said. “The run is a good event.”
