Shoals Scholar Dollars is launching its first major campaign to raise money for Colbert and Lauderdale county high school graduates to attend Northwest-Shoals Community College. The cost of a college education is escalating almost yearly with tuition and fee increases. It’s becoming more difficult for students from middle class families to advance their educations. But a group of local civic, business and education leaders has found a way to make higher education more easily attainable for qualified students.

Shoals Scholar Dollars has challenged companies and clubs to help it achieve its goal of raising $111,111.11 by 11-11-11. “We’re presenting to every club and every organization and every business to come up with at least $1,111.11,” Executive Director Randy Pettus said. The program seeks to send every high school student from Colbert and Lauderdale counties to Northwest-Shoals Community College on scholarship, providing they meet certain criteria

Shoals Scholar Dollars Fundraising week has arrived. This community project is receiving more and more attention as people begin to realize the possibilities. Shoals Scholar Dollars will provide deserving students two years of full-time tuition to Northwest Shoals Community College. Students may receive technical training or establish the basis move to four-year university.

A program that promises to guarantee two years’ tuition to all qualified Shoals students will kick off Sunday with a weeklong blitz of raising funds and awareness. The Shoals Scholar Dollars program launches in 2014 and is meant to guarantee two years’ tuition to Northwest-Shoals Community College for all qualified local students. “This will literally change the destiny of the Shoals forever,” organizer Harold Lewis said. “We’ll be second to none.”

Education is the key to great things. It is generally understood that helping our young people gain access to education is the key to a better life for us individually and as a community. That’s why some visionaries in our area created the Shoals Scholar Dollars scholarship program. Scholar Dollars are the way that we will make it possible for every Shoals area student to continue his or her education beyond high school.
